The growth in foreign-born workers comes amid a contentious immigration policy debate in the U.S. Immigrants' share of the labor force has increased since 1996, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began collecting such data. A growing population and labor force are key components of a healthy economy and the nation's ability to pay its bills, economists said. In other words, the economy is both absorbing immigrants and generating job opportunities for U.S.-born workers, the institute said.

The Republican state party, which brought the lawsuit, said it would appeal the decision with the New Mexico Supreme Court. "The legislature intended to and, in fact, did egregiously gerrymander the congressional maps," said state Republican party chairman Steve Pearce in a statement. A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington said that accusations of China using AI to create fake social media accounts were "full of prejudice and malicious speculation" and that China advocates for the safe use of AI. In a new research report, Microsoft said the social media accounts were part of a suspected Chinese information operation. The U.S. government has accused Russia of meddling in the 2016 election with a covert social media campaign and has warned of subsequent efforts by China, Russia and Iran to influence voters. A Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters that the company's researcher used a "multifaceted attribution model," which relies on "technical evidence, behavioral evidence and contextual evidence."

For the third quarter, Pioneer expects its total production to average between 705 and 725 MBoe/d, with oil production specifically to average between 367 and 377 MBbls/d. This favorable revision is despite raising its full-year oil production and total production forecasts. The state posted a request for proposals for its migrant transportation program on March 31, seeking contractors that could provide an array of services to relocate migrants by air or ground. A single-page letter from the Florida Division of Emergency Management posted online Monday shows three companies received what is called a notice of intent to award contracts for the program.

The first group of American troops is being deployed to the southern border on Wednesday as the Biden administration prepares for the expiration of Title 42, a pandemic-era measure, later this week. The active duty troops are being sent to El Paso, Texas, the site of the largest surge of migrants crossing illegally anywhere along the border in the current wave, a U.S. official said on a call with reporters Tuesday night.

U.S. officials are scrambling to manage a new surge of migrants as the pandemic policy Title 42 expires at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, which has fueled a rush of asylum seekers heading toward and across the southern border in recent weeks. Thousands of migrants have illegally crossed into border communities including El Paso, Texas, and thousands more are in cities on the northern edge of Mexico waiting to cross. They have been driven by rumors that the end of Title 42, which is expiring along with the Covid-19 public health emergency, will make it easier for migrants to enter and stay in the U.S.

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico—Five months after leaving Venezuela, Orlando Maldonado was detained by Mexican immigration authorities near the Rio Grande, a few hundred feet from El Paso, Texas. Six hours later, he died in a fire inside a cell at a crowded detention center along with 38 other migrants, according to authorities and his relatives. The blaze started when a small group of migrants fearing that they would be deported set alight highly inflammable cell mats to protest being detained, Mexican authorities said. Private security guards and immigration officers abandoned the facility, leaving the migrants locked up as smoke filled the detention area, a surveillance video showed.

EAGLE PASS, Texas—Local officials keep a refrigerated truck to hold the bodies of migrants who drown in the currents of the Rio Grande while trying to cross the border into the U.S.Across the river, families having picnics or walking along the waterfront promenade of Piedras Negras, Mexico, say they sometimes see bodies floating by or bobbing among the reeds under a bridge. “We had times when we received four or five bodies a week,” said Hugo González , owner of Funerarias González in Piedras Negras. “At one point, there were a lot of corpses and there was nowhere to put them. We just didn’t have enough refrigerators at the funeral home.”

Still, the rule change’s impact has been blunted by numerous state laws limiting abortion broadly and the pills specifically. Legal experts foresee years of court battles over access to the pills, as abortion-rights proponents bring test cases to challenge state restrictions. Two drugmakers that make brand-name and generic versions of abortion pills requested the latest FDA label update.
